Mammal Study Award 2024

Edgardo M. Rengifo, Guillermo D'Elía, Gabriel García, Elvis Charpentier and Fanny M. Cornejo (2023) A new species of titi monkey, genus Cheracebus Byrne et al., 2016 (Primates: Pitheciidae), from Peruvian Amazonia. Mammal Study 48 (1): 3–18.

Integrating results from external traits, cranial features, and genetic evidences, this study describes a new species of titi monkey (Cheracebus aquinoi Aquino's titi) from Peruvian Amazonia. Morphological differences were observed between Aquino's titi monkey and other closely related species, including differences in the shape of the nasal bone and the size of the medial process of the palatal bone. Phylogenetic and genetic analyses revealed that Aquino's titi monkey forms a distinct lineage within the genus Cheracebus. This study contributes to understanding the diversity of Peruvian primates and advances our understanding on the biogeography and evolution of titi monkeys. This study also provides valuable information which is important for conservation efforts and the development of effective conservation strategies.
